Beer review of a Scottish Style Ale called Monday Night Piper from The Second Wedge Brewery in Uxbridge, ON
Inspired by the Scottish 80/- (80 shillings) style of beer, this smooth amber ale is priced according to its strength. The star of Monday Night Piper is its luxurious malt notes - the finest pale malts from England and caramel and chocolate malts from Germany, before drying to add sweetness, rich colour and an enticing bisque toffee Sugar flavor. Great with roast duck, lamb pies, dried fruits and nuts.
What is Scottish Ale?
Scotch ale, or wee heavy, is a style of beer originating in Scotland that is fermented with ale yeast. Generally low in bitterness with rich malt sweetness, the caramel-colored beer often uses a pale malt base backed by darker malts. Though it can vary, many are comparable to English barley wine. Some American interpretations of Scotch ales are peated and smoky.
The Second Wedge Brewery Overcoming Adversity
In May 2022 The Second Wedge Brewery was hit with a tremendous storm that shut down operations. The building is still undergoing structural inspections, making it inaccessible for most beers. Although their online store is currently closed, you can still visit their website for restaurants and retailers where you can get their beers to support Second Wedge.
Newmarket's Market Brewing has made room for the Second Wedge in its facility to move in four fermentation tanks and a Brite tank, allowing the relocated brewery to perform repairs on its own grounds.
